Tackling the terrorist threat
A new campaign encouraging people to store and use the national Anti-Terrorist Hotline has been launched.
Greater Manchester Police’s Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) is spearheading the initiative to make people aware of the 0800 789 321 hotline number. It is taking place throughout February and March, and includes a live action advert that is available to view through the GMP website
Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter, head of Greater Manchester Police's CTU, said: “It is not just about being aware the number exists. We want people to store it so that when they are concerned about suspicious activity they contact us.
“Any piece of information people give can be important and may be the final piece of a jigsaw we are putting together. We need the support, help and most importantly information from people in Salford.”
All calls to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline are treated in confidence and information is given to specialist officers who can then assess the appropriate action to take. The campaign is part of ongoing work to make people aware of how they can help and is not linked to any current threat.
The message from the GMP CTU is ‘you might not need to use the number now but store it just in case’.
*GMP CTU was established in April 2007 as part of a national infrastructure to tackle the terrorist threat. It has already made a significant impact in the region with five people convicted and many others disrupted from their activities.
