Tackling environmental crime

street cleansing

Tackling environmental incidents such as fly tipping, dog fouling, littering, graffiti and vandalism is a priority for Salford City Council because of the effect these crimes have on the quality of life of our communities.

Salford City Council set up an Environmental Crime Unit in 2006 to deal with these problems. Using a combination of education and enforcement, in the last year alone the unit has helped to deliver a 16% reduction in fly tipping and 15% less graffiti.

Enforcement activity has focused on the commercial sector and private land owners, using a variety of methods to target culprits, including the use of covert CCTV.

From April 2007, the council has issued in excess of 620 fines, including 10 notices making private land owners clear their land. In addition, over the last two years 313 people have been prosecuted for failing to pay their fines.
