Beatsweep blitz

Beat Sweep

Environmental crime, which includes fly-tipping, littering, graffiti, vandalism and dog fouling, can have a huge impact on our city, ruin public spaces and is expensive to clean up. One way of making a positive impact on a neighbourhood is to do a beatsweep.

Beatsweep: what’s it all about?
Beatsweep is an initiative to focus on local problems - Aiming to clean up an area and target criminal activity. They are led in Salford by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Salford City Council, local housing providers, the Probation Service’s community payback team and Police Community Support Officers.

Originally beatsweeps were a way to reduce arson related crime but this evolved into a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of crime and disorder, including environmental crime. The first beatsweep in Salford took place in Little Hulton and was so successful there are now five a year across the city.

Barton
In mid December 500-600 homes in Barton were targeted over a five week period for a Christmas clean-up. Residents had the opportunity to dispose of rubbish, which was collected by the council, and the community payback team cleared alleyways of waste, removing in excess of 10 tonnes. In January, the fire service followed up with fire advice and carried out fire assessments in the neighbourhood.

Where next?
The next beatsweep is planned to take place in February or March when the teams will be returning to Little Hulton.

Contact your Neighbourhood Management teams if you think a beatsweep may benefit your area.
