Theft of metals: a problem that affects us all

Over recent years the value of metals such as lead, copper and iron has risen dramatically.

This has resulted in an increase in thefts of these materials, which criminals take from insufficiently protected buildings and other street based features such as railways, railings and street furniture.

Metal theft can result in significant damage to properties caused by the forceful removal of the metals. This can sometimes cause fire or flooding, which can rapidly spread to neighbouring buildings.

In Salford, thieves have even stripped schools and churches of valuable materials, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The theft of metals can also have consequences for the community as a whole. The cost of insurance premiums is rising, and residents are being exposed to hazardous situations as a result of thefts.
