East Salford

Salford Cathedral

Welcome to the pages for the East Salford Neighourhood Area. Here you will find information about the neighbourhood, as well as current news, useful contacts, and opportunities for getting involved.

The area is made up of three wards: Broughton, Irwell Riverside, and Kersal. For statistical information about these wards see our ward profiles page.

Chapel Street area

Chapel street area is part of the historic core of Salford. The area extends westwards from Manchester City Centre all the way through to the University of Salford and contains the busy A6 and main railway links to the Northwest. Redevelopment of the area is being led by the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company (URC). The URC is an independent company that has brought together the city council, the North West Regional Development Agency and English Partnerships who, with existing regeneration partnerships and the private sector, will drive the renewal.

Broughton renewal area

In April 2006, a renewal area was declared in Broughton. The area is bordered by the river Irwell to the north-west, Bury New Road to the east, and Camp Street to the south. An action plan has been developed to address issues relating to Housing, Environment, Consultation and Community, Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour, Traffic and Transport.

Charlestown and Lower Kersal

Charlestown and Lower Kersal is the focus of the New Deal for Communities Programme. The overall vision for the New Deal for Communities area is “To make Lower Kersal and Charlestown a place where people want to live, by building a community and future that engages everyone”. This will involve, a safe and attractive environment, quality homes, improved and expanded local facilities and low unemployment.

Duchy Estate

The Duchy estate forms part of the Duchy and Pendlebury Renewal Area. This consists of the land and buildings bordered by: the rear of Egmont Street to the east, the disused railway to the north, Broomhall Road and St John Street to the west and the rear of Johnson Street and Duchy Road to the south. The Duchy Bank Redevelopment Scheme is introducing 37 new private family homes into the area and is scheduled to be completed by February 2008.
