Cooking and eating
If you can't cook for yourself and there is no one to help you, there are other options. If none of these work, then you should contact us as ask for an assessment.
Equipment
Kitchen equipment to help you prepare, cook and eat is widely available in the shops. Easy-grip utensils, small and lightweight pieces of equipment such as kettle-tippers can help you in the kitchen.
If lifting pans and other kitchen utensils is difficult, then it may be worth buying smaller versions or using a chip pan basket to make it easier to lift your cooked food out of boiling water.
Cooking in a microwave oven uses less water so can be lighter. It is usually cheaper too.
Easy-grip cutlery, non-slip plates and plates with high sides can all make meal times easier. These products are available from most mobility shops and some high street shops.
The Disabled Living Foundation produces a range of factsheets including one on eating and drinking which may give you more suggestions and ideas to make life easier.
Eating out
Many pubs and other food outlets offer mid-week discounts which can make eating out economical as well as a good way to meet up with friends. Travel help may be available to get you there and back.
There are also a number of luncheon clubs around the city, offering cheap, healthy, hot meals and a chance to catch up.
Ordering in
Most supermarkets now offer online ordering and home delivery. Some companies deliver healthy, nutritious meals to your home - which you can then cook either in the microwave or in a conventional oven when you want.
You may even find a local take-away that will deliver to your door.
Council services
If you have tried some of the ideas above and they have not worked, you should ask us for an assessment. The Disability Service can provide specialist equipment and, if necessary, adaptations to your home. Your local integrated care team will be able to tell you about meal delivery services.
