Monton and Winton
As you leave Worsley Village you will walk past the Alder Park and Westwood Park areas before entering Monton Village, one of the liveliest villages along the canal. The village is centred around Monton Green, once part of the Duke of Ellesmere's estate and at the heart of Monton's Conservation Area, which also incorporates the grade II* listed Unitarian Church.
Westwood Lodge, over Parrin Lane Bridge and opposite the towpath, marks the start of an old route along the canal known as Dukes Drive. To the north and east of the canal as you walk up Dukes Drive is a wedge of open space called Worsley Greenway and beyond that is the Monton - Roe Green loopline. The loopline was formerly a railway line which catered for suburban commuters into Manchester. Today it is an attractive walking and cycling route connecting to routes across the city on Sustrans regional route 55 a key route into Manchester and Bolton.
Monton Village centre has developed along a high street, which is now populated with independent shops and cafes.
Proposals for Monton and Winton
This is the canal's central point in Salford. A new country park with events area, a 250 berth marina, paths and activities at Dukes Drive will make it a real focal point. This will be the main arrival point for visitors to the canal and the starting point for trips. It will also be a big part of telling the story of the canal. It will bring the area's industrial and boating history to life and provide facilities for school and group trips.
A new 250 berth marina is proposed at Dukes Drive and this exciting development will meet demand for moorings along the canal and create a visitor destination. The marina will be home to cafes, information points, toilets and boat hire facilities.
Car and coach parking facilities will be provided in Monton as part of proposals to create a new country park at Dukes Drive on the site of a former miniature golf course site. The park will provide facilities for all to enjoy, including children's play areas, picnic facilities, an events space, tranquil walking routes and heritage trails. We're kicking it all off this year with the escape from the city event, an exciting music festival for all the family.
