Newlands
The government launched the Newlands programme in 2003. Newlands is a unique £23m scheme, which aims to transform huge areas of derelict land across the North West region.
It should see these derelict and neglected areas turned into thriving, long lasting and well-maintained community woodlands. As well as a wide range of environmental benefits it should also deliver some real social and economic benefits for the area.
Nine key sites across the North West were selected to benefit from the first phase of Newlands and the LIVIA site is the largest single site of these. The proposals depend at this stage on a number of key landowners in the area agreeing to lease land to the Forestry Commission. If this can be arranged the Forestry Commission will then take responsibility for improving the land, creating a valuable asset through reclamation of over 200 hectares of land in the valley.
