Internet access & computers
- There is no charge to use the computers and the Internet at Salford libraries, and it’s easy to join - simply fill in a form and start surfing!
- All children must have parental consent to use the computers and we recommend children aged eight and under be accompanied by a parent or carer.
- You don’t need to book (but booking is advisable at busy periods) and there are self-service terminals in most libraries.
- You can use a computer for 45 minutes, and sessions may be extended in 15 minute periods if there are computers available
- We can help you use the computers if you are a beginner, and there are computer classes for beginners in some libraries.
- You can print in colour or black & white and some libraries have scanners for you to scan your documents and photos. All prints must be paid for on collection.
- You can download files from the Internet and save them onto your own discs or memory sticks, and you can buy blank CDs at the library.
- Read our Terms and conditions of use. We will need you to sign to confirm you accept them when you join.
- Read our Health and safety guide for useful advice on safe use of computer equipment.
Booking
- You can book a computer up to one week in advance, for a maximum of one session per day. Sessions may be extended in 15 minute periods if there are no computers available
- Booking may not always be necessary - computers may be available if no-one has booked them.
- You must bring your membership card each time you wish to use the computers. If you do not have your card you may not be able to use a computer.
- If you are more than 10 minutes late for a booked session the computer will be made available to other users
- You can use 'Zoomtext Xtra' software which has a screen magnifier which will enlarge words and pictures on the screen, and text-to-speech software which will read back to you documents, emails and webpages.
- You can use a keyboard that has larger letters and numbers if you find the black keyboards too dark, and use a trackball type mouse that you can control with the palm of your hand if you find our small ones difficult to grip.
- You can use height-adjustable desks so please tell us if find the other ones too low.
Please don't struggle - staff can help you at any stage, just ask!
Also, ICT in the community are able to offer ‘free’ computer classes in lots of venues around the city.
