Skips

This page provides information for skip companies. If you are not a skip company representative but wish to find out more about skips please visit our skip services page.

Builders’ skips require a permit if they are to be placed on the highway. This is a requirement of the Highways Act 1980. The city council, as highway authority for Salford, has the right to specify conditions relating to the position of highway skips.

Information about the specification of the skip is contained in our application pack.

How much does it cost?
The current charge per permit is £30. The skip owner's representative must apply for the permit in person at the Highway Services office (details below) before the skip is deposited on the highway.

If the skip company is registered with us, the cost is reduced to £15 per permit. There is an annual registration fee of £100.

What will happen if I do not obtain a permit?
We will remove and impound any skips from the highway at the earliest opportunity. Please note that any skip deposited on a highway without an appropiate permit will be removed at the earliest opportunity by the City Council. All costs incurred to remove any offending skip will be recharged to the relevant skip company.

"Three strikes and out"
If this type of non-compliance occurs three times within a twelve month period, the skip company will be removed from the central register. They will not be allowed to deposit skips on the highway in Salford. A prosecution will be considered under section 198(4) Highways Act 1980

How long does a permit last?
A permit is valid for a maximum of 28 days. If a skip is required for a longer period you will need to reapply. A further charge will be levied.

How do I join the registration scheme?
