Any person who wishes to conduct a business by employing private hire drivers and vehicles must first be licensed with the local authority.
Application to become a private hire operator (to employ licensed private hire drivers and licensed vehicles) must be made to the licensing section. Before an application will be put to the Licensing Regulatory Panel the applicant must provide planning permission and public and employers liability insurance.
The application fee for a private hire operator is £209 for a one-man operator (licensed for one person and one vehicle only and cannot take bookings for another driver). The fee for a private hire operator with two to four vehicles is £272, five to ten vehicles £458, eleven to twenty vehicles £523 and twenty plus vehicles £679.
Once granted the licence will remain in force for one year unless suspended or revoked. See Taxi Licensing Policy.
