What is Salford Community Leisure (SCL)?
SCL is a community benefit society incorporated under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965. It is an independent legal entity, separate from Salford City Council.It has its registered office at New Bridgewater House, 12 Bridgewater Road, Walkden, Salford, M28 3JE.
How SCL is organised
The Chief Executive is responsible for the day to day management of SCL’s affairs, and he is accountable to the Board of Directors, who appoint, remove and fix the Chief Executive's terms and conditions of employment.
The Board of Directors ensures that SCL conducts its affairs in accordance with its stated purpose. It sets the policies, strategies and objectives, and then supervises the Chief Executive and his staff who are responsible for delivering them. The Board is accountable to the members through elections and the power of removal.
Composition of the board
From April 2010, Salford Community Leisure will have new governance arrangements, including a new board. This new board will have full legal responsibility for running the business. The new board will have two executive directors (Stephen Hassall as Chief Executive and Ray Higson as Head of Finance) and three non-executive directors.
The three non-executive directors are:
Mark Dutton (Chair) - Mark has previously been the Chair of Salford Community Leisure. Mark has been active as Chair of Eccles RFC and with Salford Sports Network. Mark is a partner in a company based in Worsley Village.
Andy Feathers - Andy is a Financial Consultant for Deloitte based in Manchester. Much of Andy's work involves partnership type projects such as Building Schools for the Future and he has worked with a number of local authorities and trusts on different types of leisure projects. He was also involved in the original establishment of Salford Community Leisure in 2003. Andy is actively involved in a number of sports including triathlon and undertakes his outdoor swim training at Salford Watersports Centre.
Ross Griffiths - Ross is a Solicitor at Cobbetts based in Manchester. Ross is a specialist in the public services sector and has experience in Salford with the city council, NHS and various housing bodies. Ross was project manager for the legal elements of the original establishment of Salford Community Leisure and has been involved with us in various capacities since 2003.
