Salford’s new Park and Pedal scheme allows commuters who live a long way from the city centre to park their cars and cycle the last section of their journey to work.
For city centre workers who drive, the final part of the journey is often the most congested. Combined with the hassle and cost of finding a parking space and the subsequent walk to their destination, this section of the journey can waste a lot of time and money.
Our new Park and Pedal scheme is based at Albert Park in Broughton, just 1.5 miles from the city centre. That’s just a 12 minute cycle ride to Deansgate – probably much faster than sitting in traffic at rush hour! The Broughton Cycleway will take you right into the heart of the city, where there are ample cycle parking facilities close to many key destinations.
As well as saving time and money, further benefits include reducing carbon emissions from your car and getting some exercise – 1.5 miles of cycling can burn up to 100 calories.
This pilot project has been funded by Cycle City Ambition Grant funding. 10 brand new cycle lockers have been installed at Albert Park. Members of the Park and Pedal scheme simply drive the first part of their journey to Albert Park, leave their car in the car park, collect their bike from the locker and ride the final part of their journey into the city centre. At the end of the day, they ride back to Albert Park, secure their bike in the locker and drive home.
Members will be given a key to a secure locker and will need to provide their own bike. The locker will be for the sole use of the member so it will always be available for their use and they will not need to share it with others.
In addition to the lockers, there is also a bike pump and repair stand located on site to help with minor repairs and punctures. This is free to use and available 24 hours a day.
Members will be expected to pay an annual fee of £40, as well as a £25 key deposit, which is refundable when leaving the scheme.

If all lockers are full, we will be able to add you to a waiting list for when one becomes available. If this pilot project is successful, locker numbers may increase or it may be expanded to other sites across Salford and Greater Manchester.
The lockers have been located in an area that is well overlooked to deter anti social behaviour. Additional lighting has also been provided as part of the project and the lockers can only be accessed by the keyholder, which is more secure than a padlock. Despite these security measures, it is recommended that members take out bicycle insurance, as Salford City Council cannot be held responsible for any damage to bicycles stored in the lockers.
