Programme of night time resurfacing

What’s happening?

We need to resurface the roads we’ve been working on to provide a smooth and safe new surface at the junction. We will also apply a new, high friction road surface and paint white lines, and other road markings.

What’s involved?

To resurface the road, we need to prepare it by removing some of the existing surface before applying the new one. This is the noisiest bit of the work. We also need to reset gutter covers and manhole lids as well as repaint white lines and other road markings. These works will be less disruptive.

What is ‘the noisiest work’?

The noisiest work includes the removal of the top road surface and any use of mechanical ‘breakers’ or ‘saw cutting’ for breaking out hard materials like concrete. We aim to finish this work by 12am on every shift, wherever possible. Please note other types of disruption through the night may include reverse beepers and flashing lights.

When will it take place?

To do this work, we need to fully close some roads on the below dates, between 7pm and 6am during each shift:

Background information

The SBNI programme was agreed in outline in 2016 and following scheme development, consultation and approvals, this is the seventh package of work to be delivered in Salford.

More than 100,000 people in Bolton and Salford use buses for both work and leisure so the scheme is about improving bus reliability to get you to your destinations quickly and easily. The more reliable the buses, the more people will choose them as a way to get around which will help to ease congestion on the roads. This package of works will also provide improvements for pedestrians and general traffic.

The works will be taking place at both junctions at the same time to shorten length of the project and the subsequent disruption wherever possible, and are due to complete in summer 2024.

Working hours will be Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm. There will be temporary bus lane suspensions and lane closures at both junctions throughout the works. To minimise disruption for residents and commuters the works affecting traffic flow will be carried out between the following hours:

  • Wigan-bound side of the A580 between 8.30am and 2.30pm
  • Manchester-bound side of the A580 between 10.30am and 4.30pm

A number of temporary left turn and right turn bans will be required for short periods at various stages during the project. These will always be accompanied by a clearly signposted diversion with access in and out of properties maintained at all times.

For the safety of commuters and the workforce, a 30MPH speed limit will be in place through the junctions for the duration of the project.

Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

Notices will be placed on local bus stops for more information about any temporary bus stop relocation or bus route diversions required during the works.
