Peel Green Cemetery and Crematorium

Peel Green Cemetery

Peel Green Cemetery was opened in 1879 and covers 32 acres of land. To date, more than 43,000 interments have been carried out.

The public toilets are located at the the crematorium and are available seven days per week. A number of water taps are provided within the grounds for use by visitors.

There is a one way system in place for vehicles, visitors are requested to keep their speed to ten miles per hour for the safety of all cemetery users.

Peel Green Crematorium was a former old Non-Conformist burial chapel, which was converted into a crematorium in May 1955. Since then over 51,000 cremation services have taken place there.

In 2015, significant improvements have been made within the crematorium building, such as refurbishment of the chapel, installation of a state of the art music system available to all families, and new cremation equipment ensuring full compliance to environmental legislation.

The chapel can seat up to 80 mourners and a loop system has been installed at the crematorium to assist people with hearing difficulties to follow the funeral service.

A public address system is also in place to allow mourners who gather outside at large funerals when the chapel is full to participate in the service.

Additionally, an electronic organ is also installed and is available for use during services.

The cemetery has been awarded Green Flag status and recent improvements have helped transform the cemetery into a first class facility which benefits the local community. This has included:

  • Upgraded paths within the cemetery grounds
  • Better provision of information for all visitors
  • Improved wildlife and bio diversity areas
  • An improved memorial garden

School groups are welcome at Peel Green Cemetery

The war memorials within the cemetery are of particular interest to many groups. To support self led visits to study war memorials in the local area we have developed the teacher information sheet and 'looking at war memorials in the local area' activity sheet which can be downloaded below.

School visits to the cemetery are self-led however we ask teachers to contact us before planning a visit so that we can provide any support or advice required.

Peel Green no longer has an office on site, for assistance, please contact the main office at Agecroft Cemetery on 0161 686 7290.
