Pendleton Private Finance Initiative

Pendleton is about to see some big changes!

Over the last few years alone, Pendleton and the surrounding area has been changing before our very eyes.

Most recently, the upside down terraces at Chimney Pot Park have been the big talking point with the innovative use of space for a new kind of living.

Then there's the brand spanking new Pendleton Gateway - with health and library services all under one state-of-the-art roof. It grew out of the ground opposite St Paul's Church, a beautiful listed building, providing a wonderful contrast between old and new.

With the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) starting to grow legs and get moving, Pendleton is on the cusp of a huge transformational wave.

The PFI is one of the biggest housing investments with £121m to spend on improving council housing in the area.

The area, which surrounds Shopping City (Salford Precinct), will benefit from a large scale regeneration programme with more affordable family housing being built, existing homes being refurbished, better transport links being introduced and improved shops, community facilities and open spaces.

Once the PFI work begins in 2011, the landscape of Pendleton will change forever. To remember what it looks like, we've set up a special group on photo sharing website, Flickr. Here you can view photos and upload your own.

The council has been working with residents and partners over the past five years to develop the plans, which will see Pendleton become a neighbourhood of choice, where people aspire to live.

There are now three organisations bidding for the PFI contract. Drop-in sessions with the bidders were held at the beginning of July. It was the first chance for Pendleton residents to meet each bidder and see what plans they had for the area. Since July, the bidders have been busy going through all the ideas and comments and making changes to their plans. Come along to the next set of drop-in events to see the latest plans, find out what changes have been made and to ask any questions.
