Ancient monuments

A scheduled monument is a historic building or site of national archaeological significance that is included in the Schedule of Monuments kept by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, supports a formal system of scheduled monument consent for any work to a designated monument, whether above or below ground level. Applications for scheduled monument consent should be made to English Heritage and not Salford City Council.

Salford has three scheduled monuments and one proposed:

1. The Delph, Worsley Road, Worsley, the canal tunnel entrances and wharf, dating back to 1759 to 1760
2. Wardley Hall moated site, Wardley Hall Road, Worsley, a moated site with island occupied by medieval hall and gardens
3. Promontory Fort, 300 metres west of Great Woolden Hall Farm, Cadishead, a promontory hill fort dating back to the Iron Age
4. Lime Kiln, Barton Road, Worsley, proposed
