National planning policy

National planning policy must be taken into account when the city council makes decisions on planning applications and produces its own planning policies.

The National Planning Policy Framework sets out the government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied. National Planning Practice Guidance provides further advice on specific issues. The government has published separate policies on traveller sites and waste.

The government also publishes National Policy Statements relating to the provision of major infrastructure.
