Design and heritage

Understanding how places change, what makes them distinctive and the significance of their history is key to creating a successful city.
By embracing the city’s rich heritage and incorporating these elements into the ever changing cityscape we aim to create a high quality environment, in which workers, visitors and residents can celebrate and engage with the past, whilst looking forward to a bright future.
Salford City Council is committed to providing and maintaining a high quality environment. A thought out approach to designing spaces and place to incorporate, preserve and protect the city’s historic environment, is crucial in securing the city’s future success.
By exploiting Salford’s heritage, together with good urban design, the character of the city can be improved and sustained for all to enjoy.
Recent work includes:
- The production of the Design Supplementary Planning Document: Shaping Salford.
- The production and adoption of the Cliff, the Crescent and Adelphi-Bexley Square conservation area appraisals, alongside extensions to the conservation area boundaries for the Cliff and the Crescent
