Design and Heritage

Understanding how places change, what makes them distinctive and the significance of their history is key to creating a successful city. By embracing the City’s rich heritage and incorporating these elements into the ever changing cityscape we aim to create a high quality environment, in which workers, visitors and residents can celebrate and engage with the past, whilst looking forward to a bright future.
Salford City Council is committed to providing and maintaining a high quality environment. A thought out approach to designing spaces and place to incorporate, preserve and protect the City’s historic environment, is crucial in securing the city’s future success; by exploiting Salford’s heritage, together with good urban design, the character of the city can be improved and sustained for all to enjoy.
Recent work includes:
- The production of the Design Supplementary Planning Document: Shaping Salford: guiding good design within the city
- The production and adoption of the Cliff, the Crescent and Adelphi-Bexley Square conservation area appraisals, alongside extensions to the conservation area boundaries for the Cliff and the Crescent.
- The appointment of a Heritage Champion raising awareness of heritage issues within Salford
