The pledges - reducing crime in Salford

CCTV control room

We work in partnership with the police, fire and rescue services, criminal justice agencies and all our partners to reduce the levels of crime and disorder in the city and enhance the local environment.

What went well in 2009/10

  • In 2009 all crime reduced by 15% in the city, with over 4,000 fewer victims of crime.
  • In 2008 a third of Salford people asked said that anti-social behaviour was a problem. By 2009, this had reduced to less than a quarter.
  • The council ran Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Projects (SNAPs) in six areas tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.  During these projects we cleared up 144 tonnes of bulky waste and graffiti was removed from over 440 sites.
  • The council helped to reduce burglaries by making security improvements in 500 homes, installing 52 alley-gating schemes and protecting over 2,000 homes with a forensic property marking scheme.
  • We opened a council CCTV control room which has won a national award for innovation and management. The centralised control room links into the police radio which allows the CCTV operatives to talk to police officers as incidents are taking place.
  • Operation Staysafe staff spoke to nearly 4,000 young people on Friday and Saturday evenings to get safety messages across.

Our challenges

Crime, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour have a big impact on quality of life. Levels of serious violent crime and anti-social behaviour have reduced in Salford, but the number of these crimes is still high compared to other areas of Greater Manchester and the country as a whole.

What we will do

Working with our partners, to reduce the fear of crime we will:

  • Help young people who have been identified as at risk of becoming offenders to avoid turning to crime.
  • Involve at least ten secondary schools in a programme to help combat hate crime.

To reduce anti-social behaviour we will:

  • Run eight SNAP weeks in Walkden North, Weaste and Seedley; Swinton North; Boothstown and Ellenbrook; Barton; Langworthy; Cadishead and Kersal.
  • Take legal action against people committing anti-social behaviour.
  • Continue enforcement and education to reduce sales of cigarettes and alcohol to people who are under age.
  • Recruit 30 new off-licence premises to the Having the Bottle to Say No campaign, to reduce the sale of alcohol to under age people.
