Another £8m for Salford homes
Salford's New Broughton development has been awarded £8m from the government to help provide affordable homes for local people.
The funding was announced by Housing Minister John Healey as part of a further £51m being put into housing schemes across the country stalled by the recession.
The money from the HCA, the national housing and regeneration agency for England was allocated to New Broughton through the Kickstart programme.
It will restart house building on the next major phase of the New Broughton development enabling a further 169 homes to be built.
It comes just weeks after Salford City Council received a separate £8m investment from the government to build more than 100 new homes in the city.
The council and developer Countryside Properties helped to secure the additional funding for New Broughton with a successful bid to the government to get the project moving again.
New Broughton in Lower Broughton is one of the country's largest and most ambitious regeneration schemes, with 3,500 new homes, a new primary school, recreation and open space along with new retail and local facilities.
The homes will offer properties for rent, private and shared ownership and with the government's support they are expected to be completed in early 2011.
The options available through the HomeBuy Direct scheme are also a helping hand onto the housing ladder for first time buyers.
Work on the new homes is being delivered through a partnership between the city council, Countryside Properties, Great Places Housing Group, Contour Housing Group Ltd and Salix Homes.
Councillor John Merry, leader of Salford City Council said: "Together with our partners and the HCA we're working hard to beat the effects of the economic downturn and get New Broughton back up to speed. He added: "Salford City Council's Arms Length Management Company Salix Homes will be supporting the council in relocating existing tenants and residents to their new homes once they are constructed".
"This government money is cash for the development and not the developers and it will spent on homes for local people.
"I'm delighted that we can now get things moving again with the development which will contribute to the wider regeneration of the city.
The city council's lead member for housing, Councillor Peter Connor added: "New Broughton is about providing quality affordable homes that offer people choice and we've always been committed to completing the scheme. Now we have this extra help we can make that happen."
Added Judith Winterbourne, Group Customer Services Director for Contour Homes: "As a Salford based organisation Contour Homes is delighted to be playing its part in the continued regeneration of this area. This announcement means that investment in the area will continue, which can only be good news for existing residents."
Les Brown Countryside Properties Regional Project Director said: "We are delighted to have been successful with our Kickstart bid; New Broughton can now progress again after stalling due to the economic downturn. This funding will help reinvigorate the project providing many more new affordable homes and community infrastructure. We can move forward and deliver the next phases and with Great Places now onboard we can all look forward to a brighter and more positive future."

Countryside Properties will commence construction at the beginning of November on new homes that front onto Great Clowes Street, they will be a mix of apartments and houses offering mixed tenure homes.
Stephen Porter, chief executive of Great Places Housing Group, said: "This is great news and it will help us to continue to provide good quality affordable homes to people who need them and make sure New Broughton is a thriving and popular neighbourhood to live in, for years to come."
