Council website is officially one of the best in the country

This is an archived news story from March 2010

The council's website has once again been ranked by IT experts as one of the best local authority websites in the country.

The website has received the accolade of a '4 star' ranking, making it the top website out of all the Greater Manchester councils, and nationally one of only 11 sites to achieve this standard.

The independent survey of 433 local council websites praised Salford for how it covered the disruption to services during the severe weather in January as well as everyday information such as the A-Z list of council services.

The council's website has had an increasing number of residents accessing a variety of services online. In the last year there were 17 per cent more unique visitors to the site which was also commended for how easy it is for all people regardless of ability to use.

Using a structured questionnaire the panel of IT experts explored how well the site responded to the needs of a range of typical local authority customers.

The ‘4 star’ endorsement means that Salford's website will be regarded as a benchmark for other local councils about where they might look for an example of best practice.

Cllr John Merry, leader of the council, said of the news: "Once again our website has been recognised nationally as an excellent example, which is a great boost to the many staff that contribute to it daily to keep the people of Salford constantly informed."
