First urban swim in new line-up of events

Swimmers in The Quays where the Great Swim will be held in September.Salford is to host its first open water swim as the city makes a splash with a new line-up of events.

The British Gas Great Swim will take place at The Quays on 26 September as the flagship attraction in the council's new events programme alongside Salford's BBC Proms in the Park.

It is the first swim of its kind to come to Salford and is one of only five urban Great Swims in the UK.

It is a new challenge for all swimming abilities with entries open for people aged 16 and over.

Water is a key theme in this year's Events To Shout About programme with many events either on or near the water.

The programme has been put together by the city council under its Visit Salford campaign to bring more tourists to the city and provide quality events for residents.

Also new to Salford on 17 July is the British Aquathlon Championships, a race for adults and juniors on land and water at The Quays.

August sees the return of the Dragon Boat Racing (1 August) and the second 10k run at The Quays on 5 September.

Salford's Food and Drink Festival is back in October and the Salford Film Festival in November while December will welcome the city's ice rink at a new home on the Plaza outside The Lowry and Lowry Outlet Mall at Salford Quays.

Councillor John Merry, leader of Salford City Council said: "Last year more than 50,000 people visited our events bringing money to the city's economy and helping to put Salford on the map.

"We've got another fantastic programme of events and I'm delighted to see new events being added to this year on year giving people a variety of world-class attractions right on their doorsteps."

Councillor Barry Warner, the council's lead member for culture and sport added: "Salford has played host to a number of high profile events and is setting an example to other cities as a lead destination for sporting, musical and cultural events."

Entry prices for the British Gas Great Swim are £30 with limited places available.

People wishing to enter should do so soon to avoid disappointment. Entries should be made through the Great Swim website.
