Tickets on sale for BBC Proms in the Park in Salford

Tickets are now on sale for the classical music event of the year, when the BBC Philharmonic takes centre stage for BBC Proms in the Park in Salford this summer.

The concert will be held at Buile Hill Park on Saturday 11 September with the city council offering discounted ticket prices for Salford residents again throughout June and July.

Last year's concert saw around 8,000 music lovers fill Buile Hill Park to enjoy the Proms, led by the BBC Philharmonic and Chris de Burgh.

Tickets for this year's event can be bought by calling 0844 815 7131 or logging on to Visit Salford.

A total of 4,000 discounted tickets for residents priced at £13.50 each will be available up until 31 July on a first come, first served basis with 500 allocated to each community committee area.

Full price tickets are £20 each and all ticket prices this year include booking fees and postage costs.

On-site parking can be pre-booked for £6.00 (inclusive of booking fees).

Salford is one of only four locations outside London to feature in the BBC Last Night of the Proms concerts which will be broadcast around the world as part of TV, radio and internet coverage.

The BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is part of Salford City Council’s Events to Shout About programme which aims to build on the city’s growing reputation as a world-class visitor destination.

Proms in the Park in Salford will be filmed and made available through red button coverage for satellite and cable TV viewers. It will also be available online and on BBC Radio Manchester.

An audience estimated at six million tuned into watch BBC One and Two's coverage of the 2009 Proms which included the Proms in Salford.

Around 1.2 million digital viewers watched live coverage of Last Night of the Proms concerts across the UK through the red button on their TVs.

The BBC Philharmonic will once again take centre stage at BBC Proms in the Park in Salford with the rest of the line-up currently being finalised.

There will be a live link to the Proms concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, placing the Salford event directly into the BBC's main Last Night of the Proms programme.

Councillor John Merry, leader of Salford City Council said: "Salford is a great stage for the Proms and we're proving this by hosting the event for a third year running.

"This year's Proms in the Park should prove to be just as exciting and spectacular as previous concerts and I'm delighted that Salford residents can join the entertainment again with our reduced price ticket system."

The news that the event will once again be in Salford comes as the BBC Philharmonic prepares to move to its new home at MediaCityUK at Salford Quays next year, joining the rest of the BBC North and the organisation's new regional hub.

Richard Wigley, general manager of the BBC Philharmonic said: "Last year's Proms in the Park in Salford was very special, and we are delighted that the event is once again part of the BBC’s official Last Night festivities.

"It is a fitting celebration of the relationship between the BBC and Salford ahead of our big move into MediaCityUK next year.”

Notes for editors

Salford residents purchasing discounted tickets will need to provide postcodes as proof of residency when booking.

Ticket numbers will be limited to six per household.

The 4,000 reduced priced residents' tickets are made up of 500 tickets that will be available for each of the eight Salford community committee areas.
