Tot's Cafe in Higher Broughton is a hit
This is an archived news story from July 2010
Young children in Salford have been tantalising their taste buds by finding out all about healthy eating at their very own Tot's Cafe.
The group of under fives are enjoying learning all about healthy living alongside their parents, eating at the weekly Tot's Cafe at Higher Broughton children's centre.
Parents have enrolled with their young ones on the six week course to find out about healthier food options and basic cooking skills.
Food labels can be confusing for parents to read, trying to understand the exact nutritional value of ready prepared food and working out whether everyone in the family has had their recommended 'five a day' portions of fruit and vegetables.
With this in mind, parents are also being taught how to read and understand food labels, alongside tips on nutrition, healthy recipes and good hygiene.
At the end of each session all the parents and children sit down together to eat the food they have prepared.
Cllr George Wilson, Mayor of Salford, visited the tots cafe, to see for himself all the fun the children were having, and to find out about their healthy eating tips.
Said Cllr Wilson: "Encouraging children to eat healthy foods is so important and can sometimes be a tough job for parents. The cafe is a brilliant way of making learning about food as fun as possible for both the children and parents."
