Prevention team

The prevention team will work with children and young people aged between 8 and 17. To stop them becoming involved in crime by providing help and support at the earliest opportunity.

A young person can be referred to the prevention team by any professional in Salford via CAF, or a referral can also be made by the young person or a family member using the form.

What can the prevention team offer?
Once the prevention worker has met with the young person and their family, a plan is worked out and could include the following types of work:

  • offending behaviour
  • anti-social behaviour
  • anger management
  • parenting support
  • dealing with conflict within the family
  • working with young people who are perpetrators of domestic abuse
  • victim awareness
  • restorative justice
  • mentoring/learning mentor

Referrals can also be made to specialist workers within the team, which include speech and language, clinical psychology, substance misuse, health and integrated target youth support.

What type of actions?
The actions will be different for each person. For example, if a young person has problems with anger, they may be put on an anger management or if they are getting involved with drugs, they would meet with a substance misuse worker. There are also opportunities to get involved in more fun activities.

Case study: Paul, aged 13

When I started messing around, I was just bored and didn't think there was anything better out there. The prevention team helped me to get involved in sport and I'm now playing for my local football team and hope to play professional football one day. The staff in the prevention team have given me belief in myself and made me realise there is more to life than getting drunk and causing trouble.
