The nursery

Primrose Hill Children's Centre has an on-site day nursery, which is run as a not-for-profit limited company called Primrose Hill Day Nursery Ltd, but is quality-assured via the children's centre manager. The Day Nursery has a strong reputation locally, and has been full with a waiting list since opening in January 2008.

Opening times

The provision is open, Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 6.00pm, 51 weeks of the year.

What we offer

The nursery is registered for 32 babies and toddlers (20 two and three year olds, and 12 under-twos) and serves nearly 60 local families who take up either full or part-time places. There are two base rooms - Unit one for the under-twos, and Unit two for the over-two's. These rooms are beautifully decorated, laid out and equipped to create a calm and welcoming environment, and to meet the children's individual needs.

The day nursery works to all aspects the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, and has the services of the children's centre's Education Lead Teacher, who advises on curriculum across the setting. Primrose Hill is a ‘continuous provision' setting (offering play indoors and outdoors throughout the day) and emphasises the importance of child-led learning. The nursery leads the field in Salford in the use of learning stories. Other types of vital communication with parents and carers include daily report sheets, home-nursery diaries, and constant dialogue. Relationships between the staff and parents are very strong and valued, yet always based on a professional footing.

A proportion of our places are fee-paying, whilst some children are funded through the Nursery Education Grant (for three and four year olds), the new two year old funding pilot, sponsored childcare, or college funding.

Staff

The staff are all qualified to NVQ levels 2, 3 or 4, and partake in continuous professional development. Staff turnover has been absolutely minimal in the first two years, as it is such a pleasant, happy and rewarding work environment. Each child has a key worker, and key workers tend to move with their child at points of transition. Smooth and happy transitions, in and out of the nursery and between rooms, are a high priority at Primrose Hill.

Our Ofsted inspection

Primrose Hill Day Nursery was inspected by Ofsted in April 2009, and awarded ‘overall good, with outstanding elements'.
