Protecting your home

There are many measures you can take to deter a burglar from targeting your home. The more deterrents you have, the safer you are. Many of the methods used to deter a burglar are low cost or cost nothing at all.
Windows
- Always close windows, when you leave the house
- When replacing windows buy windows to BS7950 standard as these have been certified secure. Fit laminated glass to all publicly accessible windows
- Lockable windows provide a valuable deterrent. Locks suitable for fitting to existing windows can be bought from most hardware stores
- Consider buying a time switch which will automatically turn on your lights or a radio when you are out
Doors
- Lock all external doors, remove your keys and set your burglar alarm if you have one
- When buying a new door buy one certified to PAS024 which is certified as secure. Existing doors should have a standard five lever mortise lock fitted
Property marking
- We would recommend you to get your possessions marked. You can do this either by the forensic property marking solution, if you reside in an area where the scheme has been rolled out, or by a UV marker (you should use your postcode followed by the number of your house).
- Take photographs of those items that cannot be marked.
