Protect your vehicle from theft and criminal damage

Smashed car window

Until we all drive cars which are crime proof, we should take the following precautions. Top five recommendations to prevent vehicle crime:

  1. Always remove valuables from your vehicle - remember criminals can sniff out hidden valuables
  2. Always lock your vehicle and close your windows
  3. Use an approved mechanical immobilisers
  4. Always park your car in well lit areas and consider the benefits of using a supervised car park rather than on street parking
  5. Never leave your car keys near your front door where they can be seen by criminals. Using simple tools such as a hook and cane criminals can fish them through your letter box

Success to date: Thanks to a number of partnership projects, Salford saw a 31% reduction in vehicle related crime between April and June 2010, when compared to the same time period in 2009. That's 335 fewer victims. If we all take the precautions above we can continue these reductions.
