Report Dangerous Buildings/Structures
The control of dangerous buildings and structures forms a very important element of the building control service. Unstable brickwork, roofs, boundary walls, fire damaged buildings etc. represent, potentially, a very high risk to public safety and are therefore given high priority.
Dangerous Buildings are controlled by the city council under Sections 77 and 78 of the Building Act 1984.
We respond to all reports of dangerous buildings, walls and structures within the city on a 24 hour, 365 days a year basis. We try to inspect any building or structure reported as being dangerous within 1-2 hours, day or night.
You can contact us during office hours by telephoning 0161 779 6175, or outside normal working hours on the city council's emergency number 0161 794 8888.
If the building or structure is a potential danger to public safety or building occupants, we take the appropriate action to remove the danger. When necessary we have legal powers to require the owners of buildings or structures to remedy the defects or if necessary we direct our contractors to carry out works to make the building or structure safe. We also provide advice on the structural condition of buildings to the local emergency services.
