Latest motorcycle campaign

The new THINK! motorcycle campaign "Named Riders" aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries amongst motorcyclists by humanising them in the eyes of car drivers. This campaign marks a radical departure for THINK! after research showed drivers are more likely to notice motorcyclists on the roads if they personally know a biker. Motorcyclists are currently overrepresented in casualty figures and account for 19% of all road deaths despite only accounting for 1% of all traffic.

The campaign also features a local radio advert introducing Dave who travels to work on his bike through Salford via the A6, Albion Way and Trafford Road. He would like you all to look out for him on his route.

Think for yourself campaign"Think for Yourself!" campaign.

Students at Salford City College have designed Salford's latest road safety campaign. The students based at the Pendleton Centre were commisioned by the Road Casualty Reduction Group to create a multi-media campaign aimed at highlighting the kind of peer pressure put on young drivers which can lead to reckless driving, speeding, drink or drug driving and not wearing seatbelts.

A film, an audio advert, leaflets and postcards were delevoped by the students. The film can be seen at Salford Online.

Cycling instructorsCongratulations!

All of Salford's road safety officers have now become fully qualified, nationally accredited cycling instructors.

In order to be able to train cyclists to the new national Bikeability standard, officers undertook a week long training course and have been monitored and assessed whilst running training courses in a number of Salford schools.

Bikeability is the Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

Each year, all primary schools are offered the opportunity to take part in the cycling programme.

New fire engines with seatbelt messageSeatbelt message on new fire engines

Residents of Salford are now being reminded to 'Belt Up' with the message emblazoned on the back of all the new fire engines.

The Road Casualty Reduction Group currently work in partnership with the Fire and Rescue service and the police as part of the bi-monthly seatbelt campaign.

"Smiley SID" is here!

Smiley SID being used by pupils at Clifton Primary SchoolA new tool is available to encourage drivers to slow down around schools.

Smiley SID is a Speed Indication Device, which displays either a happy or sad face, depending on how fast the vehicle is travelling.

It is designed to give a friendly reminder to drivers to check their speed in the vicinity of schools and is an ideal way to teach children about the dangers that exist as they travel to and from school and in their neighbourhood.

It is available for loan to all schools in Salford.

Seatbelt campaign

Police officers stopping vehicles which have unbelted occupantsThis campaign is carried out on a regular basis in the attempt to get people to wear their seatbelts.

It involves stopping any vehicle with unrestrained occupants and offering the choice of taking a £60 fine or attending a 30 minute hard-hitting presentation, delivered by firefighters who have to deal with the aftermath of car collisions.

The aim of the campaign is to educate rather than prosecute. The presentation has been well received by those who have chosen to attend.

Over 80% of those surveyed have stated that they will now change their habits after seeing the content of the presentation and listening to the firefighters tell their stories.
