Roots, reflections and urban journeys - 10 life stories from people in Salford

A collection of memories of ten older people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities (BME) of Salford. The older people are from seven established communities - Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Yemeni, Black Caribbean and Jewish. The Jewish community dates back 140 years.

These memories tell the stories of the older people - why they came to Britain, their aspirations and most importantly their determination to make a new life in a new country. The stories also tell of their contribution to Salford during their working life and since retirement.

Their experiences are unique and personal so we can not generalise or make assumptions but, through their stories, we can get a flavour of culture, family life and values of the different communities.

Salford City Council would like to thank the older people for their willingness to share their memories with the wider community.
