The Kerbcraft Scheme: training pedestrians

Kerbcraft is a key element in the government's road safety strategy, ‘'Tomorrow's Roads: Safer for Everyone" aiming to reduce road casualties. Initially Kerbcraft was a three year pilot study, (2003-2006) however, due to its success in Salford the project is continuing and is now reaching new areas of the city.
Kerbcraft teaches 5-7 year old children essential pedestrian skills through six weekly sessions at the roadside. The project encourages parents and people from the local community to take part by volunteering as Kerbcraft Trainers.
The structured training sessions cover three topics. These are:
- Choosing safe places and routes
- Crossing safely at parked cars
- Crossing safely at junctions
We're running the scheme in partnership with participating primary schools. To find out if your local school is involved, please get in touch.
Streets Ahead
Streets Ahead is a FREE training resource that is primarily aimed at out of school providers. It consists of a one hour staff training session as well as practical road safety materials that are useful when out walking with children. Streets Ahead is available on request to all carers who are responsible for child pedestrians.
If you are interested in finding out any aspect of child pedestrian training or volunteering as a Kerbcraft trainer, please contact Sarah Sparrow Pedestrian Training co-ordinator on 0161 779 4869 sarah.sparrow@urbanvision.org.uk for further information.
