Art competition 2009
On 4 December 2009, the fifth annual ‘It's cool to save energy' art competition awards ceremony took place.
Schools were provided with some fun energy saving facts and a challenge requesting they design an original character to showcase how energy can be saved in the home. The judging panel, which included the Mayor of Salford, chose the winners.
Overall winners were Amber Hainey, aged 14, St Georges RC High School with Uncle Saver and Sam Neill, Light Oaks Junior School with Stan Bye - Energy Detective.
Overall runners up were Jessica Martin-Smith, age 15, St Ambrose Barlow RC High School with Flash and Clarisse Abasi from St Thomas of Canterbury RC Primary School.
Winners from each school were invited to the awards ceremony and were presented with their prizes by the Mayor of Salford, along with Olympic gold medalist Chris Cook - who won gold at the Beijing Olympics in 100 metre breaststroke.
Art competition 2008
In 2008, pupils were challenged to produce a picture of an original character that showed the different ways people can save energy in their home.
A panel of judges, including the Mayor of Salford chose the winning artwork.
Jodie Groom, aged 9 from Light Oaks Junior School was the overall winner for the Primary School category. Jodie designed Lewis the Lion to encourage people to draught proof their homes. Congratulations Jodie!
Amber O'Connell, aged 13 from St Ambrose Barlow RC High School won the High School category prize with Molly, a glamorous energy saving lightbulb. Well done Amber!
Winners were chosen from each of the ten schools that entered and all winning pupils were invited to an awards ceremony that was also attended by the Mayor of Salford. There was even a guest of honour with ex-Manchester City and England footballer Mike Summerbee helping to give out the prizes, including WH Smith vouchers for the winning school and pupil.
