Taking the chair training course

A three module course for new and prospective chairs of governors and a refresher course for serving chairs.

This three session development programme is aimed at prospective and new Chairs, Vice-Chairs and Chairs of Committees who wish to develop their confidence and skills as well as experienced Chairs who are keen to review their effectiveness and share ideas and good practice with governors from other schools.

The programme does not set out to impart specific knowledge about school governance as it is assumed that participants will have undertaken induction and/or other training and be aware of the key roles of governing bodies. The main focus of the sessions are on the development of the interpersonal and organisational skills required to be an effective Chair.

Sessions will cover:

  • the role of the Chair and managing the relationship between the Chair and the headteacher
  • getting to know your team, inducting new governors and supporting governing body development, developing leadership styles and team effectiveness
  • chairing effective meetings, decision-making, delegation, managing the work of the governing body and structuring committees
  • identifying issues and problems and thinking through solutions.
