School Action and Action Plus

What is School Action

School informs parents/carers that their child is considered as having special educational needs.

The special educational needs co-ordinator and teacher gather information about the child, including from you as the parent/carer and the views of your child.

The special educational needs co-ordinator will organise special educational needs provision e.g. draw up an individual education plan (IEP), work with your child’s teacher to consider appropriate school based support.

Where necessary, take advice from professionals outside the school e.g. speech and language therapists, health workers etc.

What is School Action Plus

This follows ‘School Action’, if it is decided by the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO), after discussion with you, teachers and anyone else who has been involved in supporting your child.  Your child will move to this stage if it is felt that a higher level of support is needed to enable him/her to make progress.

The special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) will draw on advice and support from outside specialists regarding further changes that could be made for your child’s special educational needs.

These specialists/services may include:

  • Educational psychologist (EP)
  • Child health or child mental health services
  • Social Services
  • Education Inclusion Service

You will be invited into the school at regular intervals for a meeting with the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO), teacher and any other professionals, who may be involved with your child’s education.

This meeting is usually referred to as a review. It should look at:

  • Progress made by your child
  • How well the individual education plan is working
  • How you can help your child at home
  • New information

Deciding future action (in a very small number of cases, a decision may be made to refer your child to the local authority (LA) for a statutory assessment).
