How to become a governor

School governors work in partnership with the headteacher and the staff in our schools to provide the best possible education for all children in Salford. They are unpaid volunteers who want to give something back to the local community.

If you can offer:

  • Time to attend meetings and get to know the school
  • Support for the headteacher and staff
  • Commitment to raising standards in the school
  • Dedication to the work of the governing body

An important note for prospective governors

Salford schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An enhanced Disclose and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will usually be required to be able to take up a school governor position.

The support available for new governors

Governor services is part of Salford City Council and we provide support to governors in Salford's schools. If you become a school governor we provide:

  • Training to help you understand your job as a governor
  • Advice via the governor services helpline
  • Information throughout your time as a governor and particularly when you are new to the role
  • Support for you at meetings

School governors come from the different sections of the school community such as parents, local businesses, community groups, religious communities and the local authority.
