Seedley and Langworthy In Bloom

Hat trick victory as Seedley and Langworthy In Bloom wins the North West In Bloom 'Urban Regeneration award for the third year running

“When I see things like Langworthy In Bloom, that is the kind of community we want.” Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott on a visit to the area.

“I was overwhelmed with Seedley and Langworthy’s entry. In all my time judging this was the best display of a community coming together and community spirit that I have ever seen.” Terry Whitehall, In Bloom judge.

The green fingered community of Seedley and Langworthy have won the North West In Bloom 'Urban Regeneration' award three years running.

In Bloom has been one of the area’s biggest successes. About 700 people have been involved in making their area cleaner, greener and safer. Hanging baskets and planters are adorning houses, shops, schools, play areas, businesses, lamp posts and road barriers right across the area.

Everyone from school children to older people have been involved. Neighbours have got to know and look out for each other and many new friendships have been forged. The project is all the more impressive as very few of the residents even have a garden.

The In Bloom steering group organise funding applications, meetings, large community planting sessions and events for judging day.

From a standing start in 2003 they won two awards in the first year of entry to North West In Bloom 2003 and went on to repeat this the next year 2004 when they also won two awards in the National Britain In Bloom contest.

Judges comments:

"One of the main benefits of Britain in Bloom is the regeneration of disadvantaged areas and nowhere is this better seen than in Seedley and Langworthy in Salford.  Here the people have been given the opportunity by the Local authority through selective funding of specific projects to improve their environment, making it safer, cleaner and greener.  No vast sums of money could achieve the results seen here.  Once derelict streets have been transformed by gating them off, adding floral and sustainable planting and letting the people develop a village type community spirit within the city.  As judges, it gave us great pleasure in seeing at first hand what can be achieved by being a finalist in Britain in Bloom.  There is no better example of regeneration in action, a well deserved Gold Medal Winner."
