Alley gating creating an urban oasis
| Across the area alley gating schemes have been creating safe new communal spaces, helping to build strong communities and forge new friendships. Residents have worked together, turning their alleys into communal gardens where children can play safely, and at the end of the day families can enjoy a quiet candlelit drink. | ![]() |
As there are very few gardens in the area the alleyways are helping to fill this role and they played a major role in the success of Seedley and Langworthy In Bloom.
“We feel a lot safer, and the community is coming together more. Every one will do their own thing with planters and trestles, and it will be much safer for children to play out in.” Marie Lamb, Resident
“It’s brilliant, we feel much safer now.” Mavis Shaw, Resident.
To date there have been 29 alley gating schemes and 1 community garden completed, benefiting 920 households.
There are six further alleygating schemes and two more community gardens to be delivered this year benefiting 224 more households. one of these community gardens is currently being developed on site at Langton Street.
Since the alleygating scheme began 23 Resident associations have been established; at the outset there were only two.
