Chimney Pot Park
Langworthy Park, known better locally as Chimney Pot Park has undergone a £500,000 make over thanks to the Big Lottery Fund.
The designers The Environment Partnership (TEP) won an exciting design competition, which involved the local community in the judging process. TEP developed their design with the community and proposals included:
- Creating a ‘grand entrance’ on Langworthy Road (which will include terraces and steps into the park)
- Picnic rooms and a sensory/nature garden
- Play areas catering for toddler, junior and teenage
- A ‘balls and events’ area to be used for a range of sports
- Improved surfacing to pathways including lighting
- Additional tree and shrub planting
- A central walkway and Arboretum through the centre of the park
The park is a former reservoir and derived its nickname from its raised position, which provides a magnificent view of the chimney pots. It sits at the cross roads of Langworthy Road and Liverpool Street, with entrances on Langworthy Road and Highfield Road. It is home to an active bowls team and throughout the year friends of Chimney Pot Park and other local community organisations organise activities and fun days from carol singing to sports and concerts. The park is a very important asset to this area, which has few green spaces or gardens.
The hundreds of people involved in Seedley and Langworthy In Bloom, and the creation of communal gardens in alleyways show how important plants and green spaces are to this active community. We are excited that they are deeply involved in the design of their own park.
“Chimney Pot Park is a valuable asset right in the heart of the community where green spaces are essential. We hope the new design will meet the community’s needs and attract more people to use it.” Joyce Fitzpatrick, local resident.
