Service voters
Members of the armed forces may register to vote at their home address just as a normal civilian elector or as a service voter. Service voters are entitled to vote in Local, Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Elections in the UK.
How do I register if I am posted overseas?
If you are overseas serving in the armed forces then you need to complete a service declaration. If you would like an application form to register as a service voter, you can contact the elections office directly, download the Service Voter form from the bottom of this page or contact your unit. You need to register at an address where you lived in the past or where you would live if you were not posted overseas.
How do I register if I am resident in the UK?
Service personnel and their spouses resident in the UK may register in either of two ways. As a normal civilian elector from December 2009 up to August 2010 you can complete an electoral registration form.
From August 2010 until November 2010 you can include your name on the annual register of electors canvass form.
You may register as a "service voter". This enables you to register at an address you would have lived at if you were a civilian, for example, a parental address. An application lasts for three years, and we will write to you three months before your registration is due to expire to allow you to renew your application form.
How can I vote?
Service voters may either appoint a person to vote on their behalf at the polling station (a proxy), or vote themselves by post. If a postal vote is chosen, the applicant should bear in mind the length of time taken for post to travel in either direction, because the ballot paper is only issued seven to 10 days before polling day. If you are registered as a service voter you are entitled to vote in Local, Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Elections in the UK.
