Sites of Biological importance
Sites of Biological Importance (SBIs) are identified by the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit (GMEU), which provides an advisory service to and on behalf of the ten local authorities in Greater Manchester.
SBIs do not have statutory protection, but those in Salford are protected by Policy EN8 Nature Conservation Sites of Local Importance of the Unitary Development Plan (Adopted June 2006). They are shown on its Proposals Map.
SBI selection is based solely on ecological attributes, the main 5 of which are:
- Exemplification of a habitat type;
- Biodiversity of habitats/species;
- Rarity of species present;
- Naturalness of the site/substrate; and
- Fragility of the site.
Depending on their condition, SBIs are given one of 3 grades:
- Grade A (county importance)
- Grade B (district importance)
- Grade C (more than local importance).
In September 2011 there were 33 SBIs in Salford.
