Skips

Depositing a skip on the adopted highway

The Highways Act 1980 – Section 139

Overview

Skip companies wishing to apply for a permit to deposit a skip on the highway must first contact Salford City Council’s Highway Authority. This is a requirement of the Highways Act 1980. It is also the responsibility of the skip company (the supplier) not the householder/builder to obtain a skip permit.

All skip permits are logged in our Skip Register. A skip permit is valid for a maximum of 28 days.

Please note that any skip deposited on a highway without a valid permit will be removed at the earliest opportunity by Salford City Council. All costs incurred to remove any offending skips will be recharged to the relevant skip company.

Salford City Council has the right to specify conditions relating to the position of the skips on the highway.

Please be informed that the council are currently reviewing all procedures and fees associated with highway permits and licences. This will be concluded by 1 April 2024. You will then be invited to join the annual register from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.

  • For companies registered on our Skip Register - £15 per skip
  • For companies not registered on our Skip Register - £30 per skip

Request for an extension

Please contact Salford City Council immediately if a skip is required for a longer period as you will need to reapply. Please note, there is a charge for each additional 28 days.

Payment for all licences and skip permits

  • Registered companies – will be invoiced on a quarterly basis
  • Non-registered companies – will be invoiced monthly

Please note that Salford Council invoices are payment on receipt. Failure to make immediate payment will result in no further skip permits being issued and your company will be placed on ‘stop’.
