Making Research Count
The national picture
Making Research Count (MRC) is a national collaborative research dissemination initiative, currently run by eight regional centres based in the universities of:
- East Anglia
- Keele
- Luton
- The Open University
- Royal Holloway, London
- Salford
- Warwick with Coventry
- York
This group of universities has a proven track record in social work and social care research, and provide social work education at qualifying and post-qualifying levels.
The aims of this national initiative are to:
- Improve the dissemination and implementation of research findings
- Increase mutual understanding between researchers and practitioners
- Influence the shape of evidence based practice, through its contribution to the debates about appropriate research methodologies for the field of social care
Making Research Count aims to work in partnership with local authorities, the National Health Service, and other relevant bodies in regional sites to contribute to the development of research informed, evidence based practice, which brings together the best of practitioner, service user and researched knowledge and expertise.
Greater Manchester and Salford
MRC (Greater Manchester) is a partnership between the Care Quality Commission, the University of Salford and ten local authority social service departments:
- Bolton
- Bury
- Manchester
- Oldham
- Rochdale
- Salford
- Stockport
- Tameside
- Trafford
- Wigan
Planned events
MRC (Greater Manchester) regularly puts together a programme of modules for practitioners in adult and children's social care which seeks to develop the culture that integrates research into practice.

Where events are organised by MRC (Greater Manchester), the Salford City Council directorates of Children's Services and Community, Health and Social Care are normally allocated between two and four places at each event and they are free of charge.
