Research Governance checklist
Have you:
- Talked your idea over with your Supervisor and the Community, Health and Social Care Directorate's Research and Information Section?
- Looked at what studies have been carried out in this area before?
- Considered funding issues?
- Considered time and commitment issues?
- Made arrangements for supervision?
- Thoroughly read the Research Governance Application Pack?
- Signed your Research Project Application Form?
Does your project consider how you will inform participants about:
- What the purpose of the study is?
- Providing additional information and advice where appropriate?
- Why they have been selected?
- How this is in accordance with Equal Opportunities?
- How the study will be carried out?
- What commitment their involvement will require?
- What inconvenience / discomfort they may experience?
- What harm or risk may be incurred?
- Informed Consent. There is a requirement in law, under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, for any research undertaken with "any person who lacks a capacity to consent" to first undergo an ethics approval process.
- Their right to withdraw or refuse to take part? The Mental Capacity Act 2005 also directs that researchers must comply with the wishes of an identified or nominated person, who is acting on behalf of any person, who, having given informed consent, subsequently loses the capacity to continue that consent.
- Whether or not they will be compensated?
- How confidentiality, anonymity, privacy will be maintained?
- How the data will be used / stored?
- Who will have access to the data?
- Who they can complain to?
Does your project plan application include:
- Details on how exactly you are going to collect your data, including locations?
- Consideration of the needs of your target sample in preparing any materials concerning the research?
- What you are going to do with your data?
- How you will make sure the data is kept confidential?
- How the data will be stored, and who may have access to the data?
- How you will test out your method?
- How you will present your findings?
- Who will own your findings?
- What arrangements are in place for compensating participants or yourself?
Have you included with your project plan application:
- A timetable for the research project?
- An example of your letter of consent for participants?
- An example of your questionnaire (if appropriate)?
- A copy of any Indemnity Insurance from your employer (if appropriate)?
- A copy of any research contract (if appropriate)?
