Policies, strategies and planning
Our mission is "to improve the life chances of Salford citizens, and to promote the independence of individuals and communities in Salford."
Our work is directed by national and local government policies, as well as the needs of local communities.
Social care is changing due to:
- An aging population
- People living with more complex disabilities
- A belief in supporting people in their local communities
We recognise that vulnerable people are often the experts in meeting their own social care needs. In Salford, we have a well developed user and carer involvement ethos. This means lots of representation at all levels.
We also work very closely with our partners in:
- The National Health Service
- The voluntary sector
- The private sector
- Salford City Council
This is because your social care needs will be met by a whole range of different services and organisations.
Over the last few years, there have been some key documents produced. These shape the way that we provide and develop social care. Two of the most important are:
- Our Health, Our Care, Our Say is the Department of Health's White Paper which sets out the vision for local health and social care services
- Putting People First is an agreement between the Government, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services and others about how social care will be provided in the future
In Salford, we have been working towards these goals for some time and have strong partnership boards for:
- Older people
- People with physical disabilities and sensory impairments
- Mental health difficulties
- People with learning difficulties
These groups decide the strategic direction of service delivery. There are user and carer representatives on each board. There are also senior staff members from:
- The Community, Health and Social Care directorate
- The Primary Care Trust
- The voluntary sector
- Other parts of the city council
