Whether you want us to arrange services for you or you use a direct payment to arrange your own support, you may have to pay something towards the costs.

If you are arranging and paying for your own social care services, you should read our buying social care services page.

You may also be interested in looking at other options which can help you to stay more independent and usually cost less.

We work out how much you will have to pay based on your income, your savings and investments and the cost of the support you are using. Your income includes any benefits that you are entitled to and we will help you to claim all of these.

  • You will never have to pay more than the cost of your support
  • You will always have some money to spend as you want

Paying for residential and nursing care is an explanation of how we work out how to share the costs of the care, between you and us (the city council).

Paying for home care, day care and other services is an explanation of how we work out how to share the costs of your support, between you and us (the city council).

Even if you are arranging your own support, you should think about contacting us to see if we can help. We cannot give you precise figures but, for example, if you are thinking about residential care, you should contact us when you have about £26,250 or less of savings.
