Street cleaning

Dropped litter can last a very long time. For example, a plastic bottle can last indefinitely; aluminium cans 80 to 100 years; plastic bags will last 10 to 20 years; and even biodegradable items such as orange peel, apple cores, banana skins and cigarette butts can last up to two years.
The city council has to comply with cleanliness standards as set out in the Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse (Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1990). Cleanliness grades (A to D) set out how clean an area should be and cleanliness standards dictate response time for cleaning up an area. Areas are zoned as to the timescale required to bring the area back to an acceptable standard of cleanliness.
The table below shows response times for bringing different areas back to a Grade A Standard (free of litter):
| How much litter is there? | When located in town centres | In high density residential areas and busy parks | In low density residential areas and other parks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostly free of litter apart from small items (Grade B) | Six hours | 12 hours | Two weeks |
| Quite a lot of litter with small build ups (Grade C) | Three hours | Six hours | 12 hours |
| A lot of litter with significant build ups (Grade D) | One hour | Three hours | Six hours |
How much does it all cost?
It costs Salford £12.32 per person per year to keep our city clean. The direct cost of street cleaning in Salford is budgeted at £2.8 million per year for the 2010/11 financial year.
