Student support

The council's student support team offers information and advice about the financial help that is available for students at university.

We process applications for student support and notify students of their entitlement.

How to apply

If you are thinking about entering higher education and live in Salford, you must make your application for student support through Salford Local Authority. You can get a copy of the form online on the Student Finance Direct website. You should print it off and send it to us by post to the address at the bottom of this page, enclosing the evidence requested, such as your birth certificate.

If you are intend to enter part-time Higher Education in 2006 application forms will be available from 28 July 2006.

Changes from 2006

Tuition Fees
Parents and students (both new and renewing) will not have to pay up-front tuition fees before or during their university education.

Universities will be able to vary fees from £0 to £3000 per year for new starters. The amount charged may vary between courses as well as between universities.

Students who started their university courses before 2006 will continue to make a contribution towards their fees up to the standard rate of around £1200 but these students will be able to defer payment until after they leave university.

Students who are offered a place at university in 2005 but who decide to take a gap year before starting in 2006 will not have to pay the new variable fees of up to £3,000 per year. Instead they will be treated as if they started in 2005 and will be asked to make a contribution towards their tuition fees up to around £1200. The payment can also be deferred. Students should check with Salford Local Authority that they are eligible to do this.

Maintenance, Grants and Loans
From 2006, new full time students from lower income households will be eligible for a new income assessed non-repayable maintenance grant of up to £2700.

Students from lower income households who started university in 2004 or 2005 will continue to be eligible for the new Higher Education Grant that was introduced in 2004.

The maximum rates of the student maintenance loan will be raised.

For students starting their courses in 2006 or later, the Government will write off all student loan balances which are left unpaid 25 years after the individual has left their course.

Universities who decide to charge the maximum £3000 for a course will have to provide at least £300 a year in financial support, such as bursaries, to students on these courses who are receiving the full £2700 maintenance grant.
