Does your spare room have potential?

If so, you could open the door to a young person's future.

The Next Step Supported lodgings scheme is looking for people with a spare room in their home, who can offer 16-21 year old care leavers that crucial first stepping stone to independent living - somewhere to live, a room of their own and support from someone who cares. This form of accommodation is known widely as ‘supported lodgings’.

What do we mean by support?
Support could mean helping a young person to learn to use a washing machine, helping to make their money last or encouraging a young person to explore options within employment, education or training. It could also mean sitting down with a young person and listening to him or her.

Do I get paid?
Yes, you get paid £150 a week.

Will I have to pay tax on what I am paid?
As individual circumstances vary, we recommend that you contact your tax office as they can tell you exactly how much you may have to pay, if any.

I'm on benefits - will my money be stopped?
There are different rules for different benefits. We recommend you contact either your benefits officer or Welfare Rights in Salford (0800 345 7375) to find out whether this allowance affects your benefits.

Will I have to be police checked?
Yes, anyone working with a young person has to have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance.

What skills or abilities do I need?

  • To be able to listen to a young person and give sound advice.
  • A non-judgmental attitude.
  • Sharing hobbies and interests that will encourage communication and the ability to build the young person’s self-esteem and confidence.

If I join the supported lodgings scheme, is there support available for me?
Yes, all householders will have their own supported housing worker, who is there to answer questions that may arise. All young people living in supported lodgings will have their own worker provided by The Next Step Project.
